Gym elliptical trainer workouts are really great for burning a lot of calories without the exercise feeling so strenuous that you end up not wanting to do it. Just a nice, even stride will work out every muscle of the body as well as being easy on your joints. Something that I like to do is vary my stride from forwards to backwards. Yes, you can actually stride backwards on a gym elliptical trainer. And when you do, you'll find that it works different muscles in your legs harder than the forward stride.
A great time to use one is when you are coming back from an injury. Ellipticals are so smooth that you won't risk injuring yourself again. And you definitely don't want to do that, as that could set you back a lot longer. Go easy on your workout after an injury. Start out at a slower speed and for a shorter period of time. As your body heals, you can increase your speed and intensity until you are back to normal.
